Would now be a good time to mention the need for a playoff in college football? And also how stupid you must be for kicking a kick-off out of bounds.
Update: Ask and you shall receive. Could the government actually do something good for a change? maybe..
According to the Wall Street Journal, the House will be voting on a bill to force NCAA into a playoff system. Read the full article here:

BCS is a wonderful system. When is the rest of the world gonna realize that there are really only 4 good football conferences. SEC , Big 12 , Big 10 (Sometime) and Pac 10. The ACC and Big East are also rans. Until they line up week in and week out against the big 4 conference teams and win those games consistently they will be deemed inferior. And yes they may have to schedule 2 for 1 deals or no return game deals to establish themselves as legit every year. Cincinnati has a very good team this year with a quality Pac 10 win. I believe if they were in the SEC east and had to deal with that on a weekly basis they would probably have 2-3 losses. When Brian Kelly leaves (and he will leave) it will be one more example of how this program is perceived. Their own coach knows there are bigger and better jobs out there.
ReplyDeleteBruce - good to hear from you, hope things are going well. Before reading your comments, I thought there was no solid argument for the defense of the current BCS system. After I reading what you had to say, I'm even more confident that there is no solid argument for defense of the current system. I could take this one in about 30 different directions. First, yes I predict Brian Kelly will leave also, but not because he doesn't think UC can be a national contender year-in year-out. He'll leave for a) about 5 times more money and b) because he's said before that Notre Dame is his dream job. I guarantee he would take no other job but Notre Dame. If he thinks that Notre Dame is the program that is "perceived" the greatest, then that is his fault, he needs to realize its not the mid-90's anymore.
ReplyDeleteBack to the original blog topic, I had pegged you, being a huge supporter of college basketball, as a BCS hater also. Imagine what March would be like without Cinderella stories like George Mason (Final Four 2006), Gonzaga (Elite Eight 1999), NC State (Championship in 1983)? Imagine how boring March would be if after the conference tournaments, they simply picked the top two ranked teams for the National Championship game? How different would history be if that happened: Since the invention of the seeding process in 1979, 18 out of 30 National Champions have been ranked as a 1 seed. So we would have 12 different teams that would be National Champions instead of the ones that PROVED they were the best team that year.
Finally, and I think the strongest argument. Everyone is saying that the BCS gods got lucky this year, that everything worked out as expected and their won't be any controversy. The only thing they are forgetting is how hypocritical they sound. If Texas had lost to Nebraska, they would be saying that Cincinnati is the most deserving team to play in the National Championship. However, now they claim Texas to be. The only difference? 1 foot to the left and Texas field goal is no good. The Texas field goal that was set up by Nebraska's kicker kicking the ball out of bounds. How can that determine who is the most worthy to play in the Championship game?
Lets make it clear, THE ONLY reason Texas is in the National Championship and not UC, is because they were ranked ahead of UC to start the season. The only reason UC finished above TCU is because UC was ranked ahead of TCU at the start of the season. Look at Texas' schedule, tell me at what point would Texas jump UC in the polls if both remained unbeaten? You said UC had 1 quality win against a PAC 10 team, yet since apparently you believe that rankings determine everything (BCS logic) then UC beat in total 3 top 25 teams (#21, #25, #15). Texas also beat 3 top 25 teams (#20, #14, #22). How can you seriously say that Texas deserves to be there above UC with a straight face?
Hey, I'm like you, I think the SEC is and has been for a while the best conference bar none. You put Texas in the SEC and they lose 2-3 games easy. And don't confuse me as a huge UC fan, I don't claim to be. I root for them because I have no other CF team I root for (besides UK) and because they live in the city where I pay taxes. It just happens to be this year that UC is the odd team out.
It's also a shame they pitted TCU and Boise St against each other, not letting either go against one of your "big boys" to prove their worth (since they are forced to). Hey Bruce, remember what happened last year when an Undefeated Utah played the almighty Crimson Tide?
I feel like I could keep going, but you know what would solve all this debate? The system that leaves nothing in doubt: A playoff.
Where is Brian Kelly today and who is he talking to ? UC A.D. is the one who should be interviewing for a new job. This guy makes constant good hires in all sports.
ReplyDeleteInteresting comment from junior runnning back John Goebel "I think we all understand we're not a football dynasty program yet , but Notre Dame is known". The powers that be at UC better get their heads out of their a$$e$ and do something about Nippert or they will never be able to keep a top notch coach. Even if Kelly stays this year there are sure to be more suitors next year.
While I'm on the UC hate wagon , where are the so called basketball fans at during home games. It is PITIFUL when you can't sell out a 13,000 seat cracker box for the 19th ranked team in the nation. In case all you empty seats haven't noticed Cronin has put together the best team UC has had since he got there. Of course you'll all swear you been lifelong , loyal fans forever if they contend for the Big East title. (All 7,500 of you)
Hey Guys , I need to clarify. I am for a playoff system. It would definitely make for a true champion. I'm just saying that these minor teams are a victim of their own circumstances. If Brian Kelly leaves it will have a major impact on how UC is ranked next year. Therefore they may not be able to jump a Texas or Alabama without playing them heads up. I know it is extremely tough to get these teams on your schedule but the MIchigan States , Kentucky , Washington , Miami , etc. would probably look at schools like UC for a game.
ReplyDeleteA playoff would also allow teams to take a chance on scheduling because 1 loss would not knock you completely out of the title hunt. As it stands now a Florida loss to any non-conference opponent would knock them out of the hunt. This would likely change with an 8 team playoff. I've said all along to use the 4 major bowls as quaterfinals, Move them up 2-3 weeks. (Some teams have 5-6 weeks between final game and bowl game). Schedule the semi-finals the next week , and the finals 2 weeks after that. Rotate the semis on location. East-West first year , North-South second year , Midwest-Midwest third year. I know the argument of extending the season but some teams (Navy for sure will play 13 games this year anyway). I do think UC,TCU,Boise,Texas,OhioState,Alabama,Oregon,Ga.Tech would make one heck of a tournament.
Kelly is all but gone at this point and as much as you hate UC, you can't help but feel for the students that have worked their a$$es off all year to be in the position that they are. And to not even think that your coach is going to stick with you in the biggest in school history. What do you think the situation would be had the Texas kicker missed that field goal and UC was headed for the National Championship game? Do you think Kelly would still be 80% gone? How could a head coach walk out on a team that's playing for a National Championship? Crazy to think about.
ReplyDeleteI think, without a doubt, they need to implement a rule where the can be no talking to any coach on any team (whether its a team that went 0-13 or a team that went 13-0) until all bowl games have been played. Yeah I know there's a bunch of recruiting crap and signing dates that "can't be moved" but it's just ridiculous to have the ability to bail on the same kids a$$es you've been riding all year.
Couldn't agree more about the kids. The signing date can be moved to wherever the NCAA wants it. It should definitely be moved to the end of the bowl season. Contracts are an absolute joke when no one fufills them. Schools are as guilty as coaches at this. Look at the coaches who are fired and bought out before they have a chance to even get their own 5 years of recruits. Coaches leave after 1 year sometimes when bigger and better things come along. I know it is the American way to want to better yourself but where does this leave the kids? Holding the bag as usual. I think all contracts in college should be 5 year deals. Schools have to give the coach that much time to put his personal stamp on the program. Coaches have to commit to staying for 5 years or they can't coach at another NCAA school till that 5 years is over. Of course that would never hold up in court as long as big money is involved.
ReplyDeleteQuestion? Did Brian Kelly coach UC in the bowl game after Dantonio bolted for MSU ? I believe Central Michigan had qualified for a bowl game that year also and those kids were also left holding the bag.
Trivia question? Who was the 5th starter on the 78 UK national championship team with Robey,Givens,Phillips and Macy? Computer answers not allowed.
Dan Issel? no idea just a guess.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think its official, Brian Kelly is gone. He doesn't owe jack to the city of Cincinnati, but he sure does owe his players something...
